I'm still not sure if I like this line. Do we admire the beasts in their cages, or do we pity them? Or both? Or neither?
I think I have it...we don't admire the cages, we admire the beasts; but if it weren't for the cages, we would be in danger of being eaten by those same beautiful beasts, like Belloc's naughty Jim, starting with the toes.
