The poem will never be as simple as the song. The song will never be as nuanced as the poem.

    I think a good book to see (& appreciate) the interesting interrelationships of 'song' and 'poetry' (going all the way back to Homer) is Gregory Nagy's Poetry as performance: Homer and beyond.

    We're more indebted to this notion of "Homeric performance" than we think.
