I have never seen a truer statement about poetry. It's the only art form that "lies in wait."
I discovered Roethke at 17 and he was in my soul immediately, as was Jack Gilbert. It took me decades to feel that way about T.S. Eliot. Some poets and poems you need to grow up to, some will elude you for life.
