write without

The root of most bad poetry is the eagerness of poets to write even without something important to write about.

maybe an unimportant thing can be said in a special way....but you are right that most look for the "important"

Of course, small things, things thought by others/society as insignificant can be important. The poet must recognizes importance, at whatever scale or volume, and make us see the significance of what others/society might otherwise overlook. Maybe it's a matter of poet constantly testing his/her material: Was I just writing about this/that because I could, because I have a certain facility with words, or is there a larger purpose to this writing?

Thank you responding to my assertion, Sandra.
