dead end or avenue

People think that many poems are hard to read because of the vocabulary, proper names, lacunae, allusions, etc., things they don’t readily recognize. That’s not a difficulty, that’s an opportunity to explore new avenues of understanding.

So true! This is the reason I love epigraphs at the beginnings of poems. I've learned as much from following up on such quotations, in an attempt to understand their relationship to the poems, as I have from the poems themselves--and often enough a good deal more....
