image of note

From Frost's "Birches"...
                  once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.

I've always loved this strange yet apt simile. The length or extension of what follows the 'like' is what makes it work.

and birches are my favorite trees. Some days ago I was walking around with my camera and stopped in front of a house I found beautiful, I finally asked myself why it seemed so enchanting to me and I realized it was because of the two birch trees in front.

Yes, I too find this a poignant image filled with incredible energy and beauty and innocence.
