resist, though they insist

Sometimes a poet must resist the insistence of words.

I certainly agree with this, especially when the insistence is a cliche bleeding through the bandage of what the poet thinks is an original metaphor. That's when you start to fishtail on the ice. Better to go to a word you have no sense of ownership of (easily found in rhyming dictionaries) and let it pull you like front-wheel drive into a metaphor quite new to you, and therefore exciting and able to impel you forward. That's why I like to work in meter and rhyme. For more on this subject, check out my blog at http://lelandjamieson.blogspot.com.
