uses of poetry

Sitting at a café table, I noticed a poetry book had been jammed under one leg to keep the table from wobbling.

Bill Knott used to retail the story that he sent—if my memory serves—James Tate a copy of his first self-published Collected Poems, and was later told by a student of Tate's that he used the hefty volume to prop open the classroom door on hot days. Knott reported this ruefully but never wavered in his admiration for Tate's poetry.
