little big mag

A little magazine’s significance derives from its editorial competence.

This is not true. Individual editors, armed with an aesthetic lodestone in place of a gland at the base of the brain, are able to notice and respond to resonances unknown to others. They can't help it. Like all of us they are wrong 98% of the time but are famous for the 2% that advanced an awareness of writers at the heart of the zeitgeist. They should not get credit for it, because they had no clue whether poet x or poet y were really any good. The water witcher only needs to be right 10% of the time to get rehired to explore the north 40. We're all guessing, and the generations that follow are guessing as well. We would need the testimony of readers in 2073 or so to have some sense of what the hell is going on now. No?
