Does this explain why there are so many Rilke and Rimbaud translations? :-)
Got me...I contain multitudes (of contradictions).
One thing that is probably true is that the law of diminishing returns likely applies to each successive version, until the differences are so minor as not to matter to the fidelity of the translation.
